About This Item
NY: Worthington Company, 1888. First Edition. Signed presentation from Vescelius-Sheldon on the front endpaper: "J.W. Whelpley, Compliments of the Author. March, 1889." Louise Vescelius-Sheldon, born circa 1846-1848 in Newark, NJ, was an author and Soprano singer. She traveled to South Africa seeking a "summer clime for health and rest" after having appeared in concerts and operas across Europe with her two sisters. Vescelius-Sheldon lived for three years in South Africa and this book recounts her life there with her two sisters. The book was republished as Y"ankee Girls in 'Oom Paul's Land" in 1899. J. W. Whelpley was president of the board of trustees of the public schools in Washington, DC. Uncommon to find an autographed copy! With Whelpley's signature on the rear pastedown. The endpapers are dark-brown and the signatures have weak contrasts. Uncommon to find an inscribed copy. Small 8vo., pictorial light-brown cloth, stamped in black, dark-brown & gilt (showing three Zulu warriors), top edge gilt; 287 pages. Illustrated by G.E. Graves After Sketches From Life by E.J. Austen.. Very Good (gilt bright with minor wear & soil covers, front hinge a tiny bit cracked but still very tight; very tiny shallow chip to front endpaper; contents clean & tight). Overall, a nice copy!
