London: Printed for and Sold by I: Walsh Musick Printer and Instrument maker to his Majesty at the Harp and Hoboy in Catherine Street in the Strand. No. 203, 1750. Folio. Half black leather with marbled boards, raised bands on spine in compartments gilt, titling gilt. 1f. (recto title, verso blank), 94, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved throughout.
Contains overtures to Parthenope, Lotharius, Ptolomy, Siroe, Richard the 1st, Admetus 2d, Alexander, Scipio, Rodelinda, Tamerlane, Amadis, Julius Caesar, Flavius, Acis & Galatea, Radamistus, The Water Musick, Theseus, Pastor Fido, Otho, Muzio Scaevola, Floridant, and Rinaldo.
Binding worn, rubbed, and bumped; endpapers soiled and with minor dampstaining to outer margin of front free endpaper. Occasional light soiling; small tear to title slightly affecting text, repaired; pp. 35-37 with paper reinforcement to margins. A very good copy overall. First Edition, second issue. Smith p. 283, no. 10. BUC p. 422. RISM H1310 and HH1310.
Collections of Handel overtures, arranged for the harpsichord, were popular among 18th century English music lovers, enabling listeners to enjoy the grandeur of the opera in the comfort of their own homes. The arrangements are composed primarily in two- and three-part textures, with little ornamentation indicated, allowing players to decorate the melody or enrich the harmony at will.
