About This Item

Photo album of Nicholas J. Constantine, an Ohio National Guardsman from the years leading up to, during, and after WWII in 1935-53, and his rise from Sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant. Approximately 150 black and white photos ranging in size from 2.25" x 3.5" inches to 10" x 8" inches, with most being 3.5" x 2.5". A few large 10" x 8" inch photos. Album size is 11" x 14.5" inches. Album has red leatherette covers but is unbound and some photos are loose. Constantine was a member of the Ohio National Guard's 136th Field Artillery battalion. Each photo has a handwritten caption with time, place, or description. Most photos and clippings show military maneuvers, barracks, and the the life of soldiers when not in action. Lots of military equipment pictured: 155mm Howitzer, 75mm field artillery gun, several anti-aircraft guns, field radios, tanks, and transport vehicles. Several newspaper clippings of the guardsmen which mentions them by name, including the owner of this album. At the onset of WWII in Europe, before the U.S.'s official entry, the 136th Field Artillery as well as many other National Guard units were transferred into federal service under the jurisdiction of the Army, in order to be available for deployment if needed. Mostly shot in Ohio and depicting the 136th Field Artillery of the National Guard, but there is a section at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where the 178th Field Artillery of the Tennessee National Guard is also pictured. This piece is unbound and the pages have some minor chipping along edges, but the photos are of high quality. Overall in good condition.
