About This Item

World War I Archive of 103 black and white stereoview photographs from 1914-1918, each measure about 7" x 4". Each image has a contemporary caption underneath as well as a longer description of the contextual history of the image en verso. Most photos are located throughout Europe showing primarily occupied territories in Germany, France, and England with most soldiers being of the Allied Forces such as Americans, British, Russians, Serbians, Italians, and French, which includes the French Army of Africa, and Moroccans. There are a few images of German soldiers as well as their tanks and artillery, some having been captured by British soldiers or destroyed by the affects war. One image shows two Allied heroes French President Raymond Poincare and Marshall Joseph Joffre visiting the officers' quarters on the Somme Front. A few enigmatic images show the events during the signing of the Peace Treaty of Versailles such as the Guards of the Republic in full regalia posed inside the Palace of Versailles during the signing, and another shows Prime Minister of France, Clemenceau, President Wilson, and Prime Minister of England, Lloyd George exiting the Palace after the signing, surrounded by press and onlookers alike. One photo shows a jubilant crowd gathered in old London to welcome a parade of French soldiers. This archive showcases the war from beginning til end as we see one photo of Second Division American soldiers gathered at a train station in occupied Germany awaiting to go home after suffering the most casualties of any other American division. Notable battles include Soissons, Chateau-Thierry, Saint-Mihiel, Champagne, and breaking through the German line in the Argonne. Through their valor they went on to become the most decorated division having won 7 Medals of Honor alongside countless other awards. Some shots in action include an explosive cloud under enemy trenches from the French, Renault tanks driving up to the frontlines, French soldiers storming a hill with their captain, rifle held to the sky, ferociously leading the way, views of war torn cities such as Chateau-Thierry, sharpshooters in the trenches, wrecked German submarines and tanks, a sea of Russian soldiers of which they heralded the largest army standing at 1.4 million, and many more dynamic scenes of The Great War throughout it's tumultuous four years finally found victorious by the Allies. Photos are clean and sharp, in overall very good condition.
