About This Item

Archive of 12 silver gelatin photos pasted to dark grey board and clipped from original photo album of WWI era soldiers and jockeys partaking in horse racing. Measurements are 3" x 4" with the photos themselves measuring 2.5" x 3.25". Horses were vital in military usage during the First World War and played a major role economically as they reached their peak of 21.5 million by 1920. Between the First and Second World Wars the importance of the horse in commerce and agriculture began to decline. Whilst this was going on, the sport of horse racing continued to grow in popularity, perhaps partly as a result of this general decline. Horse racing was one an international favorite sporting pastime with dozens of courses all over the world. This photo archive shows a particular race in motion with jockeys who seem to be competing with a group of WWI soldiers in officer caps and uniform. Photos have minor wear to edges and corners. Overall in very good condition, images are crisp and clear.
