About This Item

New York, New York: E.P. Dutton and Company, 1887. First Edition Later Printing . Hardcover. Near Fine. Brilliantly illustrated vintage copy of Longfellow's classic poem about a shipwreck off the coast of Massachusetts. Orig. published in a collection of his other works in 1842. this is a lovely stand-alone edition from Dutton, orig. issued in 1886; this is an 1887 printing. Unpaginated. Lavishly illustrated by a team of eight engravers under the supervision of George T. Andrew. With deep teal cloth-covered boards, decorated in gilt, black, & red on front cover, this slim hardcover is in Near Fine condition: exceptionally clean & bright, pages creamy white with a whisper of tanning to edges. Old gift inscription in lovely script dated Christmas 188? from a woman to her friend in Kansas City on verso of frontispiece; NO other writing/underlining/highlighting; not ex-lib. Only flaws are slight rubbing to extremities, including bumping at all corners & both ends of spine. A beauty!
