New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1858. Full Gilt Decorated Leather. Very Good. Quarto. Pp. 407, plus 17 full-page engraved illustrations. Green leather with wide ornate gilt-tooled borders to both upper and lower covers, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Sympathetically rebacked, 5 raised bands, gilt-ruled spine and ornaments in the compartments, gilt-stamped leather spine label, corners invisibly mended. Overall, a very good, handsome copy. Front free blank and title-page contain the ink signature of A.R. Boswell (1838-1925), who served for one term (1883-85) as Mayor of Toronto, Ontario Canada, winning by only 5 votes! Included in this analytical disquisition are: Sappho, Lucretia, Aspasia, Cleopatra, St. Cecilia, Heloise, Laura, Valentine de Milan, Joan D'Arc, Margaret of Anjou, Isabella of Castile, Lady Jane Grey, Pocahontas, La Valliere, Maria Theresa, Catherine II, and Florence Nightingale.
