Between 1940-44 he was interned in the Lodz ghetto; in August 1944 he was deported to Auschwitz. From there he was sent to the labor camps Althammer and Dora, and in April 1945 to Bergen-Belsen. Describes life in the Lodz ghetto, and the role of the Jewish Council and its chairman Rumkowski. The memoirs are interspersed with historical facts and figures on Lodz in the 19th century and on World War II in Poland, as well as with reflections on the Holocaust, its consequences and lessons, and Christian responsibility for it.
