The composition of The World of the Crusaders was guided by the desire to relate the story of the Crusades and to make the society created and sustained by them accessible to the wider reading public. The book was conceived as a balanced combination of narrative and pictorial commentary. Hence, almost without exception, the rich illustrative material is contemporary with the Crusades and their aftermath, which not only helps the reader visualise the material surroundings of the crusaders' existence, but often projects the crusaders' image of themselves.
