Part of ' John Bell's Edition'. bound at a later date to be uniform with the Cawthorn London edition and re-numbered on the spine as # 43. Complete in volume. 32mo, 5 1/4" tall, vol. 1: 184 pages; vol. 2: 244 pages + 1 engraved frontispiece and 2 engraved additional title pages, gilt spine titles 3/4 leather over marbled boards. This small volume has a very good interior, internal binding solid, paper clean and moderately yellowed with a bit of foxing toward the endpapers still supple, exterior shelf worn and leather rubbed at the extremities, the top of the spine badly chipped, fore-corner tips worn through to boards, previous owner's bookplate and name on front endpaper.

(London: Houlston and Sons: 1898) Pictorial cloth, partly gilt (that is, hard covers) pp. 72 and 12 publisher’s advertisements (157 x 110 mm) Illustrated. One of the last popular editions of this title, first published in 1715, two of whose songs were famously parodied in ‘Alice in Wonderland’. An owner’s name on verso of front free endpaper. Cloth flecked, mainly on spine and on the rear board, the pictorial front board still very presentable; scattered stains, mainly marginal, internally; a good copy.

Marbled boards have light surface wear plus edge wear, more so to bottom edge. Leather worn at corners and tail of spine, small loss at head of spine. Gilt decoration and title "Watts' Songs" to spine. Internally pages are lightly tanned with random light spotting. Neat name and initials to f.f.e.p. 72 pages, all but one illustrated with a black and white vignette.

Tree marbled calf leather binding with red leather title label on the spine. The front board is detached. Leather spine has a long vertical crack. The right front flyleaf and rear flyleaf have been removed. Light to moderate toning to the text. Armorial bookplate on the front paste down from Robert B. Finlay. A fair copy.

A detailed scriptural history of both Old and New Testaments, from Genesis through the life and teachings of Christ and his apostles, including a wealth of Judaic history, prophesy, custom, belief, and ritual, the whole organized into an engaging question and answer format. Authored by venerable 18th century English cleric and polymath Isaac Watts, D.D. (1674-1748), best remembered today for his enduring sacred hymns. Three engraved fold-out illustration plates at the back of the book depict exterior and interior views of the ancient Hebrew Tabernacle, keyed for identification. The Holy Of Holies in the third plate is has a small hinged engraved paper veil, which when lifted reveals the contents inside. Very Good. Printed in two columns with boarders. (Shaw & Shoemaker 3808) Unclear if this predated the 1803 Thomas & Andrews (Boston) imprint. Noted flaws notwithstanding, a very presentable copy of this scarce imprint. Light shelf/edge wear, light rubbing, corners gently bumped, moisture stain involving endpages (not textblock), thumb-sized chip at fore-edge of ffep and title page (does involve three lines of text near bottom), a few closed tears at fore edge, even toning to leaves, sporadic foxing throughout, owner mark at rfep, else tight and clean. Full brown leather boards, gilt decorative elements. 12mo. 214pp. Index.

Heel nick, corners worn, tiny ink stains to bottom of fore-edge, ink owner blank page 188 of Hymns, foxing starting, straightened dogears, front hinge weak. Still a nice tight copy..

Later rebinding in brown cloth, gilt title to spine. This is a rather stark library-type binding but the only apparent library sign is a pencil number in corner of title page. 365pp, octavo. Includes Watts' original dedication of 1724. Front cover has circular mark (possibly where label removed) binding tight. Text block presentable, some foxing and browning, mostly light but about 20 leaves have heavy diffuse foxing stains to lower parts of pages, though text is clearly legible. A Very Good copy. Pictures available.
