London: Merrill and Baker TWENTY-SIX VOLUMES uniformly bound. Marbled boards with matching endpapers. Top edges gilt. Spines lettered and designed in gilt. (See photos). Top edge of spine lightly frayed in several volumes. Each volume has a hand-colored frontispiece and is EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 30-40 full-page engraved illustrations with captioned tissue-guards. This is set # 196/500 of the Edition De Grande Luxe, undated but circa 1900. General introduction by Walter Besant. Our set contains 26 of 33 volumes, missing the four-volume biography of the author by Lockhart, two volumes of poetry, and "Ivanhoe". Included are: Old Mortality, Peveril of the Peak (2 volumes), Quentin Durwood, Red Gauntlet, Guy Mannerling, The Talisman, The Fair Maid of Perth, Woodstock, Monastery, The Heart of Midlothian (2 volumes), Rob Roy, Bride of Lammermoor, Count Robert of Paris, The Pirate, The Betrothed, Waverley, Surgeon's Daughter, Fortunes of Nigel, Anne of Geierstein, The Abbot, The Black Dwarf, St. Ronan's Well, Kenilworth, and The Antiquary. A beautifully-bound and very appealing set. We have found several individual volumes, small runs, but no complete or near-complete sets for sale in recent years.
