The Works of Theophile Gautier, Complete in 24 Volumes, Limited Edition

New York: George D. Sproul, 1900. A grandfather of today's supernatural genre, Theophile Gautier's unique world of vampires, ghosts, and animated mummies influenced both later novelists and movie-makers. This rare set was published for subscribers only by George D. Sproul, between 1900 and 1903. (I would guess that a new volume was shipped out once every two months over a four-year-period, which is probably why complete sets, such as this one, are rare.) The set was limited for sale in America to only 1000 numbered and registered sets, of which this is Number 703. The books have blue-gray cloth covers, with paper spine labels, and top-edge gilt. The exteriors are in Very Good condition, with some light edge rubbing. (Click on photo.) The spine cloth has uniformly darkened on all volumes. The original paper labels had used acidic paper, and, consequently, had browned to a point that the titles were mainly unreadable. I have replaced these with new facsimile labels on appropriate parchment paper, based on the originals. (Additionally, I include an extra set of labels, so that your descendents may again replace them, if needed, in another hundred years' time.) The interiors are also in Very Good condition, with only light toning. The books are all tightly bound, but I found four with front or rear paper splits over the hinges. One volume has several tears and small chips on the rear free endpaper. Each book has the decorative bookplate of the original owner on the front endpaper. Each volume has a frontis engraving with tissue guard, plus some interior engravings. I noticed that one tissue guard is missing. The title pages are all tri-color (green, red, and black). The set was translated and edited (with numerous introductions) by Professor F.C. DeSumichrast of Harvard. The contents are as follows: Volumes I and II: Mademoiselle De Maupin (also includes biography of Theophile Gautier and a Preface to the novel); Volume III: The Grotesques; Volume IV: Travels in Spain; Volume V: The Romance of a Mummy; Egypt; Volume VI: Portraits of the Day; Volume VII: Travels in Italy; Volume VIII: Fortunio, One of Cleopatra's Nights; King Candaules; Volume IX: The Louvre; Volume X: Constantinople; Volume XI: Spirite, The Vampire, Arria Marcella; Volume XII: The Quartette, The Mummy's Foot; Volume XIII: Travels in Russia (Part 1); XIV: Travels in Russia (Part 2); Belgium and Holland; A Day in London; Volume XV: Avatar; Jettatura; The Water Pavilion; Volume XVI: A History of Romanticism; The Progress of French Poetry Since 1830; Volumes XVII, XVIII and XIX: Captain Fracasse; My Private Menagerie; Volume XX: Paris Besieged; Volume XXI: Militona; The Nightingales; The Marchioness's Lap-Dog; Omphale; Volume XXII: Jack and Jill; The Thousand and Second Night; Elias Wildmanstadius; Daniel Jobard; The Bowl of Punch; Volume XXIII: Art and Criticism; The Magic Hat; Volume XXIV: Enales and Cameos, and Other Poems. Aside from Gautier's travelogues, essays, and major novels, he is of particular interest today to collectors of occult literature. Of particular interest is Volume XII, containing "The Vampire," which has also been published in the U.S. as "The Beautiful Vampire" and "Clarimonde." It was first published in France in 1836 under the title "La Morte Amoureuse," over half a century before Stoker's "Dracula." Also of note is "Spirite," which has also been published in the U.S. as "Stronger than Death." A romance between a ghost and a mortal, "Spirite" is a precursor of such 20th Century favorites as "Portrait of Jennie" or the movie, "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir." Also of interest in Volume XII is "The Mummy's Foot," the story of a young man who purchases the object once belonging to an ancient Egyptian princess, Hermonthis. He is amazed when the foot becomes animated, and even more amazed when the footless princess shows up to reclaim it. Volume V contains one of Gautier's favorites, "The Romance of a Mummy," and Volume XV features "Avatar," a story dealing with the transfer of souls from one man to another. Due to the 50-pound weight range of this set, domestic Media Mail shipping will cost the buyer, $25.00, which will include insurance. International buyers should email me in advance for shipping charges. . Limited. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Description:
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1899. Luise (often anglicized from the German as "Louisa") Muhlbach was the penname of Klara Muller Mundt (1814-1873), who achieved worldwide recognition in the 19th Century with her historical novels. Klara's husband, Theodor Mundt (1808-1861), was an equally famous novelist and critic in the couple's homeland, Germany. This following is a complete 20-volume set from Appleton, Muhlbach's original publisher, and was published between 1899 and 1900. The set is in overall Very Good condition, bound in a black cloth with die-stamped gilt spine lettering and a gilt imperial eagle. The eagle is also blind stamped on the front panel. All volumes have top-edge gilt. Click on photo. The books show light shelf rubbing (except for one volume, with moderate crown rubbing) and the Appleton name on the spine bottom is rubbed or faded. I would rate two of the volumes as Good, due to moderate cover staining and more wear than the others, many of which were…

Description:
Baltimore: Kelly, Piet and Company, 1871. This extremely rare 136-year-old Irish novel from 1871 (I could find no other listings at any of the online bookselling sites) concerns the last of a great Irish family, swindled by a corrupt relative and an occupying English government out of their huge estate and lands. The book reveals the hardship of Catholic Irish life under English Protestant occupation as shown by the injustices heaped upon the O'Malley clan. The book may possibly be a First Edition. The only date is the "1871" on the Title Page. The book is in good condition, with green covers, beveled edges, and blind-stamped borders. The gilt titles and designs on the front panel and spine are slightly faded, but readable. (Click on photo.) The book has shelf rubbing and light fraying at the spine tips, edges, and corners. It has chocolate brown endpapers. There is a penciled signature of the former owner on the first blank page. The pages are mainly clean, but with occasional small…

The books are bound in a handsome, deep green satiny cloth, with a gilt border and gilt vignette on the front panel, as well as gilt spine lettering and top-edge gilt. The books are clean and tightly bound, with rough-cut pages. There are no marks of insciptions from former owners. Seven of the 12 volumes are in Fine, sparkling condition, inside and out. Three of the remaining, Volumes I, VII, and XI, show some wear, including some fading of the spine lettering. A fourth, Volume VI, would be Fine except for a rubbed area at the top of the spine cloth. A fifth, Volume XII, has water staining to the pages, which does not affect readability and the exterior covers are fine. Each volume includes a lovely frontis engraving with tissue guard. (Three tissue guards have become unattached but are still present.) Titles are as follows: Volume I:…

Description:
Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1921. This First Edition, First State printing of "Alice Adams" from 1921 is in Very Good condition, and a bonus facsimile movie tie-in dust jacket from a 1935 printing is in New condition. (Click on photo.) The book contains all the necessary points for the extremely rare First State, including the date, 1921, on both title page and copyright page, and more importantly, the uncorrected error on Page 419, Line 14, that states, "I can't see you why don't wear more colour," in which the "why" and "you" are wrongly transposed. In the second state and later printings, this error was corrected. (Potential buyers should email any bookseller who claims to be offering a First Edition, without stating this necessary point.) The book is bound in a reddish brown cloth with black title lettering on front panel and spine. The book has light spine-tip rubbing, one frayed corner, and a slight forward slant. The binding…

Condition: Corners bumped and slightly chipped, spine heal rubbed, lightly soiled else about very good lacking jacket.

St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
