Rosanjin Kitaoji often said "Nothing should be discussed in a generalized manner". And, this is true of his art more than anything else. As a matter of fact, he among his contemporaries, is the one whose art is the most difficult to define. He was a versatile artist who mastered calligraphy, letter engraving, painting, pottery, cooking and architectural design. He achieved a high level and established his own artistic style in each field. His pottery was the greatest in number among his productions and is the most widely known. However the idea that he was just a potter is not right. He was originally a calligrapher and seal-engraver. Here in this book I am trying to trace his artistic life as faithfully as possible in the perspective of history. For that purpose, the first half of this volume is occupied by photographs illustrating his art. In the following sections, I add my criticism and comment." excerpt from the 1972 preface..
