Philadelphia: Joseph Crukshank, 1774. First edition. The first edition of the collected works of early Quaker abolitionist John Woolman, which includes his landmark two-part essay, "Some Considerations on the Keeping of Negroes." The first part of the book includes Woolman's influential spiritual autobiography, A Journal of the Life and Travels of John Woolman, In the Service of the Gospel, which was first published in 1774 following his death from smallpox in 1772. This is followed by his collected works, including his aforementioned essay on slavery, "Considerations on Pure Wisdom, and Human Policy; On Labour; on Schools; And on the Right USe of the Lord's Outward Gifts," "Considerations on the True Harmony of Mankind," "Remarks on Sundry Subjects," and "An Epistle of the Quarterly and Monthly Meetings of Friends."
