New York: Pynson Printers, 1939. First edition. Near fine.. Fine press edition of the German emigré's masterful work on printing technique. Exceptional and exceptionally illustrated work on woodcuts and wood engravings by a notable artist and the teacher of graphic novel pioneer Lynd Ward. The manual was received with much contemporary praise and publicity; Mueller was profiled in the December 1939 issue of Life Magazine, and his show (organized by printer Elmer Adler) was well reviewed in the New York Times. 12.5'' x 9.75''. Original gilt-lettered dark green cloth. Edition of 3000 copies. Lacking original dust jacket. Additional 10.5'' x 8.5'' two-color wood engraving laid in, in protective sleeve. Printed on verso: "This Signature was Printed for The Colophon March 1939." 187, [1] pages. Illustrated in black and white and in color. Bookplate of Edwin E. Gruener mounted to front paste-down. Mild wear to extremities.
