London: W. Swan Sonnenschein, 1898. First edition. The endpapers are lightly foxed, there are minor wrinkles at the fold to diagram 1, pencil mark to the front attached endpaper, a near fine copy.. Pp. xii, 400; frontis black-and-white portrait of Wallace, 11 folding diagrams at the end. Publishers original forest green cloth with spine lettered in gilt and with gilt panel lines at the top and bottom of the spine, the front and rear cloth-covered boards have blind-stamped vertical lines at the top, black endpapers, lg 8vo. In this volume Wallace documents the intellectual achievements of 19th century. He also analyses its social 'failures', such as poverty and militarism. This work was simultaneously published in the USA by Dodd, Mead & Co in New York. No ownership marks and few signs of use. A very bright and clean copy. Rarely found in such nice condition.
