About This Item

Albuquerque, New Mexico, U.S.A.: American West Books, 1992. First Edition Stated . Hard Back. Fine/Good. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2. 374 Pages. Dust jacket has some chipping and small bits missing on the right and bottom edge. The story of a New Mexico woman running for President of the United States. Candidate Katherine Jenkis has the right stuff for the job and the backing of the nationwide Women's movement. Her American Coalition party offers new hope for a nation crippled by a corrupt and ineffectual political system. Katy is haunted from the beginning of the campaign by her youthful romance with wealthy John Van Dorn. He comes back into her life during the campaign, unaware of the secret she has kept for 27 years. Opposing Katy are the giant Democratic and Republican parties. Threatened by Katy's popularity, they gang up to destroy her candidacy. Even more devastating is Reverend Thomas Atwood, leader of the reactionary fundamentalist church organization, and an influential and powerful television personality with a personal vendetta against Kay. But the most dangerous foe of Katy's cnadidacy is ruthless Joe Domino of New Jersey, who zealously serves a New York family. He wants Kay destroyed by any means. Resentment against a woman running for president grows as Katy's opponents strive to discredit her. Her adversaries suspect her of the deception dating back to her college romance with Van Dorn. The press scents a big story and goes in for the kill. Katy is finally confronted with the most painful choice she has ever had to make: love and good life, or devotion to duty and an opportunity for the biggest job on earth. Her decision results in the most improbable election and love story in American history. All of the action in this story takes place from about the fourth of July through the first Tuesday in November of a presidential election year.
