About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1962. A tale of double-dyed villainy, with right triumphant in the end First edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "David & Stella, with love from Joan". This title, the first in the Wolves Chronicles, is scarce inscribed. Aiken "made her name as an exceptional writer for children" with The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, "a dramatic gothic adventure with a strong Dickensian feel" (ODNB). Octavo. Original black boards, spine lettered in silver. With dust jacket. Illustrated frontispiece and numerous illustrations in the text. Spine ends gently bumped; spine panel toned, nicks and tiny chips at ends and corners, a few marks, bright and unclipped: a near-fine copy in very good jacket. John Rowe Townsend, Written for Children, 1966.

Synopsis

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase is a children's novel by Joan Aiken, first published in 1963. Set in an alternate history of England, it tells of the adventures of cousins Bonnie and Sylvia and their friend Simon the goose-boy as they thwart the evil schemes of their governess Miss Slighcarp. The novel is the first in the "Wolves" Saga, a series of books set during the fictional 19th century reign of King James III.
