London: Jonathan Cape. Very Good- in Good dust jacket. 1962. First Edition First Printing. Hardcover. 159 p. 20 cm. Sound and square binding in dark-brown, cloth-covered boards. Corner tips not quite sharp. Spine ends a little crinkled. There are some tiny dings to the edges, the largest on the bottom edge of the lower board. The upper board has a couple of small circular stains, which match the stains on the wrapper. The text block edges are tanned, with some light soil to the top edge of the text block. There is a small pull mark to the paper of the front free endpaper. Otherwise, the inside pages are clean and unmarked. The dust wrapper has edge wear, heaviest at the corners, spine ends, and flap folds. Small sticker pull mark on front panel. Also some staining to the front panel and the spine, which is also darkened. It is price-clipped. Reverse side of the jacket has soil and stains. Please see pictures with listing. It is still a presentable copy. The first novel in the Wolves Chronicles by British children's author Joan Aiken. Set in 1832 in a fictional England, where James III is on the throne, and the country is being ravaged by wolves. Two girls, Bonnie and Sylvia must take on the wicked governess of Willoughby Chase, Miss Slighcarp. Dust wrapper and in text drawings by Pat Marriott. A scarce first British edition. .

Synopsis

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase is a children's novel by Joan Aiken, first published in 1963. Set in an alternate history of England, it tells of the adventures of cousins Bonnie and Sylvia and their friend Simon the goose-boy as they thwart the evil schemes of their governess Miss Slighcarp. The novel is the first in the "Wolves" Saga, a series of books set during the fictional 19th century reign of King James III.
