About This Item

New York: G. P. Putnam & Co, 1854. First American edition. Original cloth. Very Good+. 8vo. Pp. 8, [1], 10-383, followed by 12 pages of publisher ads dated February 1855. Frontis. engraved illustration. Engraved title page and regular title page. Original blind-stamped green cloth, gilt lettering on spine and gilt vignette on front board. Contemporary owner name in pencil on front free endpaper; rear endpaper soiled, else a bright, fresh copy. First American edition, issued several weeks after the London edition. This copy is of the second state, with the publisher's address of 10 Park Place (changed from 12 Park Place after the second printing - one of at least six printings in 1855 alone). This copy is in the primary binding with the gilt vignette and the work's title, rather than "Irving's Works," on the spine. One of the best preserved copies we've seen. BLANCK, 10188; LANGFELD, p. 44.
