AN ANSWER to the most general objections against the being and power of witches: With some Remarks upon the Case of Jane Wenham in particular, and on Mr. Justice Powel's Procedure therein. To which are added, the TRYALS OF FLORENCE NEWTON, a famous Irish Witch, at the Assizes held at Cork, Anno 1661; as also of two Witches at the Assizes held at Bury St. Edmonds in Suffolk, Anno 1664, before Sir Matthew Hale, (then Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer) who were found guilty and executed. Introduction signed: F.B., i.e. Francis Bragge. BOUND PAMPHLET 1712. Slim 8vo, approximately 190 x 120 mm, 7 ½ x 4¾ inches, pages: [4], 1-39 plus page of adverts, stab holes in the inner margins, 3 headpieces, bound in quarter roan, gilt lettering to spine, marbled boards, coated brown endpapers. Slight rubbing to spine, slight wear to tips of corners, pale age-browning throughout, title page slightly dusty, small rust hole in Displayed affecting apostrophe, small hole neatly repaired in the inner margin not near text, small neat repair to final endpaper, evidence of removal of a small label from first pastedown, a couple of other minor faults, otherwise a good copy. Jane Wenham was the last woman to be condemned for witchcraft in England and her court case eventually led to the abolition of witch hunting and the accusation of witchcraft.
