About This Item

Jena, 1904. Ehrlich, Paul (1854-1915) and Julius Morgenroth (1871-1924). Wirkung und Entstehung der aktiven Stoffe im Serum nach der Seitenkettentheorie. Offprint from Handbuch der pathogenen Mikroorganismen, ed. W. Kolle and A. Wassermann (Jena: G. Fischer, 1904). 430-451pp. 247 x 167 mm. Original printed wrappers, margins dust-soiled, one or two tiny chips. William Welch's copy, inscribed to him by Morgenroth in German on the front wrapper. First Edition, Offprint Issue. Ehrlich became head of Frankfurt's Royal Prussian Institute for Experimental Therapy in 1899, remaining there until his death sixteen years later. Ehrlich's first seven years at the "Serum Institute" were marked by the "emergence and elaboration of his side-chain theory, the conclusion of his work on diphtheria, extensive researches into the mechanisms of hemolytic reactions (with Morgenroth), and his cancer investigations" (DSB). The present paper discusses the "Effect and emergence of active materials in the serum according to the side chain theory." This copy is from the library of Ehrlich's friend William Henry Welch (1850-1934), who, together with John Shaw Billings, was largely responsible for creating and organizing the Johns Hopkins Medical School and Hospital.
