A Very Good+ first Edition/First Printing with subtle speckled soiling to the boards and page edge soiling housed in a Very Good dust-jacket that has some rubbing to the covers and tears to the edges; Steinbeck's powerful novel of Ethan Hawley who struggles to provide for his family. The Great Depression hits his family hard and he must start from the bottom, working as a produce market clerk. He feels that he must own up to the name created by his predecessors. He is confronted by opportunities that question his integrity and common sense. Contains all points defining the first trade edition (preceded only by a limited edition of 500 copies) , first printing: (1) Boards in solid blue cloth (2) NO deboss on rear boards by the spine (3) Blue top stain (4) Page edges evenly trimmed (5) 311 pages; 8vo; 281 pages .

Synopsis

The Winter of Our Discontent published in 1961, is John Steinbeck's last novel. The title is a reference to the line "Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son [or sun] of York," from William Shakespeare's Richard III.
