About This Item
London: Sidgwick & Jackson, 1974. First edition of Elizabeth Longford's photographic retrospective of the life of Sir Winston Churchill, authorized by the Winston Churchill Foundation. Quarto, bound in three quarters morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe , gilt titles and ruling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, illustrated with numerous photographs. Foreword by Anthony Eden. Afterword by Winston S. Churchill, M.P. In fine condition. "This book was written at the suggestion of the Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States, an organization established in 1959 as an expression of American admiration for my grandfather... In the last years of his life, my grandfather, regarded by the world for his contributions to politics and history, war and statecraft, oratory and painting, was especially interested in fostering scientific and technological education. Accordingly, with funds contributed by American corporations, foundations and individuals, the Churchill Foundation initiated two programmes: a scholarship programme... and a fellowship programme... My grandfather was enthusiastic in his support of the Foundation's plans when the were formulated... I also think it safe to say that my grandfather would have been very pleased at this book and its review of his life, which was long and, as he put it in an address to a joint session of Congress, 'not entirely uneventful'" (Winston S. Churchill, Afterword).
