About This Item

[Carrollton, Ohio]: Press on Scroll Road, 2003. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Bates, Wesley. One of 100 numbered copies, large octavo size, [54] pp., signed by Wendell Berry, Wesley Bates, and James Baker Hall, with prospectus. Wendell Erdman Berry (b. 1934) was the first living writer to be inducted into the Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame (in 2015). The winner of numerous awards and a prolific author, his writing "is grounded in the notion that one's work ought to be rooted in and responsive to one's place" (n.b., per Wiki).

This work, "Window Poems", contains twenty-seven poems which reflect the author's thoughts, grounded at the "Camp" with a many-paned window which, as Hall says in the Foreword: is "a grid with more than two dimensions, a way to measure & to frame anything of his choosing....What we've been witnessing is the transforming power of the presiding image, from random thought & perception in to picture, from time into timelessness..."

Originally published in "Collected Poems: 1957-1982" this fine press publication, issued in an edition of only 100 copies, is achingly lovely; printed on a handpress with handset type, on exquisite handmade paper, with four wood engravings in red, signed by Wendell Berry and Wesley ["WW"] Bates at the colophon, and by James Baker Hall at the end of the Foreword.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full natural linen over boards, white paper spine label with black lettering, one of the four wood engravings in red on the title page; handset Cloister Lightface on handmade Torinoko Gampi paper, large octavo size (9 5/8" by 6 1/2"), pagination: [54] pp. Prospectus loosely laid in, a single sheet folded once to four pages, the title page wood engraving in red on the front, information on the book on the third page, second and final pages blank, inserted is a separate sheet with "Additional books from Press on Scroll Road", prospectus measuring approximately 6 1/4 by 4 1/2".

___CONDITION: Fine, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. Prospectus also fine, clean and without wear.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
