Stukely was both a pioneer of scientific field research and founding father of the lunatic fringe. As a young man he made outstandingly accurate records of the great monuments at Avebury,Stonehenge and others. Later in life he became obsessed with druids and created around them a crazy mythology which still bedevils archaeology. This revised edition of Stukely's biography has been augmented due to the discovery of an unpublished study of megalithic monuments drafted in 1723, and fresh evidence for his involvement in the remarkable forgery of a bogus itinerary of Roman Britain in the 1750's. Touches on many aspects of the history of ideas and taste from landscape gardening to religious controversy, from barrow-digging to Gothick follies. This would be fine but an apparent production fault has caused pp. 65-72 (4 leaves) to have a vertical crease and slightly protrude from fore-edge, otherwise virtually pristine. Unclipped jacket fine and will add protective sleeve when ordered. 1st ed. was 1950. T.p. says '44 illustrations' but list on pp.185/6 totals 51. 16.5 cm x 24 cm
