New York, New York: Simon & Schuster, 2001. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Fine/Very Fine. First edition, first printing, The number sequence is 1 3 5 7 9 8 6 4 2. Signed on the half title page, by the author, as follows: "S E Ambrose"; not personalized to anyone. Dust jacket is now protected in an archival quality cover. Black and white covers with gold lettering on black on the spine. 299 pages. 22 year old George McGovern, who was to become a United States senator and a presidential candidate, flew 35 combat missions (all the Army would allow) and won the Distinguished Flying Cross. We meet him and his mates, his co-pilot killed in action, and crews of other planes. Many went down in flames. This was published the year before Ambrose's death of lung cancer and very few were signed, and most of those that were were signed with the initials SEA. This makes this volume even rarier and more valuable. A outstanding addition to a WW II buff's collection.
