About This Item
Worcester, MA: Achille J. St. Onge, 1956. First Thus [1 of 950 copies] . Leatherbound. Very Good. 2 x 3 inches (95 pages). A beautiful miniature book, one of only two ever designed by the legendary book designer Bruce Rogers, and perhaps the most sought after of St. Onge's miniature masterpieces. Produced in a limited edition of 950 copies bound in full tan leather, blind-stamped in a cross-hatch design with gilt titles and tiny gilt apples, all edges gilt. The condition is virtually mint. ACHILLE J. ST. ONGE (1913–1978) was the greatest maker of miniature books in the 20th Century. Based in Worcester, Massachusetts, he began producing them as a hobby in 1935. By the time he ceased in 1977, St. Onge had created 48 miniature masterpieces on an eclectic variety of subjects. The books all remain much-prized by collectors.
Synopsis
This volume of seven essays and a late lecture by Henry David Thoreau makes available important material written both before and after Walden. First appearing in the 1840s through the 1860s, the essays were written during a time of great change in Thoreau's environs, as the Massachusetts of his childhood became increasingly urbanized and industrialized.
