About This Item

Cynthiana, Kentucky: The Hobson Book Press, 1945. First Edition. 82 pp. VG+ in an about VG clipped dustjacket (creasing and edgewear, soiling and light chipping).   A scarce book of poems from McGregor, who was formerly Superintendent of two Sioux reservations, Rosebud Reservation and Pine Ridge Reservation, in South Dakota. The dustjacket flap describes McGregor as well qualified “to interpret the real Indian character to the white man.” In his Introduction, McGregor writes, “Cruel and unjust as it is, the Indians must follow the white way of life and share some of the good things and suffer from the bad. They will eventually be absorbed by the white race they have loved and hated, imitated and fought, praised and condemned.” Poems include “Chief Crazy Horse,” “The Sioux Meat Supply,” “Sioux in World War Two,” “Sioux Winter Count,” “White Schools,” “Sitting Bull,” “Mixed Marriages,” and “Indian Mother Speaks.”
