About This Item

Chicago: Buxton Publishing Co, 1933. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Large (quarto) format in textured red cloth stamped in gilt. (This, the first edition, came in both red and in violet cloth, priority undetermined). 544 pp. Illustrated with sepia portraits of every major league baseball player of 1933 as well as league officials, umpires, coaches and club officials, journalists and an old-timer's section. One of the cornerstone baseball titles, this first issue of Who's Who was the only edition published in this deluxe size and quality (in subsequent years it was produced in smaller format and eventually went to digest size). Each player had his own page which included his personal date, statistics and an extensive biographical entry, as well as the studio-quality sepia portrait. The current-player section included Ruth , Gehrig, Foxx, Hartnett, Grove, etc. The extensive old-timer's section has individual, illustrated pages on Mathewson, Cobb, Delehanty, Plank, Joss and all the early stars. A solid very good or slightly better example, light wear at the extremities, previous owner's name and address front free endpaper. Lacking the very scarce dust jacket.
