Black-and- white illustrations. There are a few tiny marks to the bottom edges of the pastedowns. Very good. <p>First edition.<p>Inscribed by the author to Peter Matthiessen on the half-title: "Feb 00 / For Peter / With deepest admiration and gratitude for your guidance and help these last few years / McKay". Jenkins edited "The Peter Matthiessen Reader".<p>Matthiessen provides a quote on the rear panel of the dust wrapper: "A dramatic account of an ill-fated mountaineering family, and a well-researched study of avalanches and the mysterious nature of snow, which makes the collapse of its formations the great underlying danger in high mountains."
Synopsis
In 1969, five young men from Montana set out to accomplish what no one had before: to scale the sheer north face of Mt. Cleveland, Glacier National Park's tallest mountain, in winter. Two days later tragedy struck: they were buried in an avalanche so deep that their bodies would not be discovered until the following June.
