About This Item

LONDON.STAR,1982. UK,12mo wraps,no dw/dj - as issued, paperback 1st edn.[Published year after UK HB,1st edn.] VG.No owner inscrptn.
A key novel in Koontz's oeuvre. This title and 'THE KEY TO MIDNIGHT' were his first two attempts at stories with large canvases and interwoven webs of complex psychology, this (WHISPERS) was the more successful of the two.Tn this book he tookcross genre writing much further than in 'NIGHT CHILLS' or any previous work; the blend of police-procedural,psychological suspense, love story, and even minor elements of horror read snoothly and engagingly.
In 'THE VISION',California was the backdrop; here however,in 'WHISPERS', California's culture, history, and landscape are centre stage through so much of the novel that, the local almost becomes another character.
Following on from 'WHISPERS',Koontz used California as the primary setting for most of the novels that constitute his finest work;,he has made Southern California,in particular,as much his own as it was ever Raymond Chandler's.
This novel is also a landmark in Koontz's career.because it marks the apex of his faith in Freudian psychology as the map in which characters' motivations are traced and explored;subsequently, novel by novel,he moves toward an apparent belief that the human mind functions more complexly that Freud evr theorized; at the same time he seems to believe that the explanation of human evil is simpler than Freud proposed yet more mysterious.
