[10], 4-306, [4] pp. Navy cloth with gold lettering on the front board and spine, spine with gold, purple, and blue lettering on the spine; purple topstain. Price of $5.95 on front flap of dust jacket. Philip Roth produced acclaimed fiction for over fifty years. This is his only novel to feature a female protagonist, and concerns her struggles in a small mid-western town in the 1940s. Roth's third book, uncommon in this condition. Owner's stamp on the free front endpaper, else Fine in a close to Fine dust jacket with just a touch of edge wear.
Synopsis
When She Was Good (1967) is Philip Roth's only novel with a female protagonist, Lucy Nelson. In this funny and chilling novel, the setting is a small town in the 1940s Midwest, and the subject is the heart of a wounded and ferociously moralistic young woman, one of those implacable American moralists whose "goodness" is a terrible disease. When she was still a child, Lucy Nelson had her alcoholic failure of a father thrown in jail.
