About This Item
The Sole UK Printings published by Blackwell / C. Daniel in 1916-1921. Complete Series of 6 Volumes. All 6 BOOKS are in Very Good+ or better condition. Vols. 2-6 bear the bookplate of auctioneer and author Anthony Hobson with Vol. 6 coming direct from the Sitwell s library at Renishaw. Some age related markings and edge-wear to the covers, more-so to the earlier titles. Some toning to the page edges and text-block with some spotting in places. All copies are free from inscriptions. Striking cover artwork and end-papers ( to Vol.4) by former Vorticist artist, William Roberts to Vols. 4 and 6, and to Vol. 3 by Laurence Atkinson. The 1919 issue of 'Wheels : The Fourth Cycle', is dedicated to the memory of Wilfred Owen, M.C.'. This was the first publication to print seven of Owen s poems together for the very first time : The Show , Strange Meeting , Á Terre , The Sentry , Disabled , The Dead Beat and The Chances . Only five poems were published in Owen's lifetime (Three in 'The Nation' and two that appeared anonymously in the 'Hydra', a journal he edited in 1917 when he was a patient at Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh). Owen's poems were not to be published as a complete volume until the following year in 1920, when they were published by Chatto and edited by Siegfried Sassoon. An important Modernist production being the first publication to print several of Owen s poems together for the very first time. In addition, this issues of 'Wheels' also featured the work of, among others, Aldous Huxley, Nancy Cunard, Iris Tree and the Sitwells . All are protected in removable Mylar archival covers. Extremely scarce as a set in such collectible condition. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
