What Tomorrow Brings is the story of Gainesville, Florida and the author's memoirs between 1918 and 1996. Of his 84 years, 74 of them were spent in Gainesville, a north-central Florida town he watched grow from a population of a few thousand to more than one hundred thousand. He was on hand at age six to see his mother, father and other residents celebrate the end of World War II on November 11, 1918. As a young boy he rambled through the Old Tabernacle, a giant pine building located on the site of the Matheson Historical Museum, alongside Sweetwater Branch on East University Avenue. He climbed what is now called the Seagle Building, a ten-story structure that was just a hollow shell for many years after Florida's Boom busted in the late 1920s. the old Kelley Hotel was a playground for youngsters who liked to lie on its top in the cool of a hot summer night and count the stars that seemed only a few feet above them. He watched in terror as the white-robbed members of the Ku Klux Klan marched the streets of Gainesville, coming out of the dark with their torches and disappearing into the night as silently as they came. It's a story of a town seen and loved by a little boy as well as the poignant love story of the little boy as he grew to manhood. Many male Floridians who grew up in one-time small towns should be able to see themselves in that same little boy, shy, afraid of girls, but who got lucky when at age 19 he found the girl with whom he would spend the next 61 years. You will love seeing Gainesville in the 1920s, 30s and 40s. The old tabernacle burned in 1924, and the west side of the square in 1938, two of Gainesville's greatest fires. What Tomorrow Brings is a sequel to Cold Before Morning, 1992, and continues the story of one branch of the McCredie family.. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
