I found this the most interesting book, with a possible tying of Three Cities, Sholem Asch has given us. There is more of timely import, there is a vitality and clarity that some of his work lacks, a maturity of conception and vision and performance. A story of the Germany of this post-war world -- of the whipping up of anti-Semitism, without and within, of the errors and faults of the Jews in bringing it upon themselves through the very policies into which their service to the Christians had forced them. A powerful, terrifying, horrible picture, personified and dramatized in a few outstanding families:- the Bodenheimers, opportunists, artists, philosophers -- and Jews; the von Steckers, proud Junker stock -- and a Montague and Capulet situation between the two families. It's an absorbing story, and covers the period of post-war Germany, through the appalling days of the inflation, and beyond. A memorable book.
