Eyewitness accounts by about fifty artists and sixty writers, including historians, novelists, soldiers, naturalists and travelers, Mark Twain, John James Audubon, Washington Irving, and General Custer among them, who experienced the winning of the West after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
