Werther, to a libretto by Edouard Blau, Paul Milliet, and (Jean-François-Romain-) Georges Hartmann based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's novel Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (1774), was first performed in Vienna at the Hofoper on 16 February 1892, under the direction of Jahn, and in Paris at the Opéra-Comique on 16 January 1893, under the direction of Carvalho.
