Description:
New York::: Scribners,,, 1969... First Printing of the First US Edition. A Near Fine copy with previous owner sticker removed from the flyleaf in a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket. These five works grew, of course, out of Hemingway's considerable experience of the Spanish war as a correspondent for the North American Newspaper Alliance and as a participant in filming "The Spanish Earth." More specifically, they grew from adventures in and around besieged Madrid--particularly in the Hotel Florida and in a bar called Chicote's. The book is unified, then, in time, place, and action. It is unified even more by the dominating presence of the author, who is to be found alive on every page. That presence slants the focus, but also gives the book its sharp distinction. This is immediate, unmistakable Hemingway. This collection contains Hemingway's play "The Fifth Column", and the four stories "The Denunciation", The Butterfly and the Tank", "Night Before Battle" and "Under the Ridge". Despite his fascination… Read More

Numbred. Limp Vellum. SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe. Adonais: An Elegy on the Death of John Keats. London: (Chiswick Press for the Reed Pale Press), 1935. Small, slim quarto, original full limp vellum, top edge gilt, uncut, blue silk ties.Limited edition of Shelley's moving tribute to his fallen friend, the poet John Keats. Number 180 of 250 copies, printed in red and black by the Chiswick Press and bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe.Composed as a pastoral elegy, specifically in the tradition of Milton's beautiful Lycidas, it was first published in the spring of 1821, immediately after hearing of Keats's death."Shelley's use of the classical pastoral elegy form was natural enough. He had studied and translated many classical elegies himself; he had also read and admired Milton's 17th century interpretation of the form in Lycidas. Most critics believe Shelley modeled Adonais upon Virgil's tenth Eclogue, Bion's elegy on the classical hero Adonis, and the anonymous elegy o Bion himself. It is a beautiful work and… Read More
