New York: Covici-Friede Publishers, 1929. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. With commentary by Havelock Ellis. Tenth Printing. Near Fine in a Very Good jacket, unclipped ($5.00), lightly soiled, a small chip at the top of the front panel, larger chip at the foot of the spine. Green cloth with silver gilt lettering on the spine, faded to match the loss on the jacket. Square and firmly bound with a green top stain, clean internally. Hall's groundbreaking and highly controversial novel about the lesbian relationship between Stephen Gordon and Mary Llewellyn.
Synopsis
The Well of Loneliness is a 1928 lesbian novel by the English author Radclyffe Hall. It follows the life of Stephen Gordon, an Englishwoman from an upper-class family whose "sexual inversion" (that is, homosexuality) is apparent from an early age. She finds love with Mary Llewellyn, whom she meets while serving as an ambulance driver in World War I, but their happiness together is marred by social isolation and rejection, which Hall depicts as having a debilitating effect on inverts.
