About This Item

Portland, Me.: Published by F.J. Smith Co., Inc., 1903. Vol. XIV, No. 11 (November). 16pp. Periodical. 16½ x 11 inches. Illustrations; advertisements. Horizontal fold; tears at fold and some losses there and in fore-edge margins; Good only.

Unrecorded Portland, Maine pulp magazine, perhaps a one-off, i.e., essentially a vehicle for advertising novelties, cheap household goods, and patent medicines-many of the latter from Chicago. The original content of the Welcome Guest are four dime novel-like stories written especially for the paper: The X-Ray Eye by Wm. H. Aultman; Off Madman's Reef by Miss Edith Snow; A Midnight Attack by Willis S. Meade; and A Trial at Farming by Leon G. Doyle.

Patent medicines advertised include Vitæ-Ore from Theo. Noel Company in Chicago (the cover ad), Dr S. Mixer's "Sure Cure for Cancer," Ren-Car-Ta blood purifier from Saginaw Medicine Co., Cascarets for babies from Sterling Remedy Co. of Chicago and New York, "Electric Belts" from Vienna Electro-Medical Institute in Chicago, medical consultations by Dr. Sproule, B.A., "Catarrh Specialist" of Boston, and another electric belt, this one from Monarch Electro-Medical Institute in Chicago.
