About This Item
London; Walter Scott Limited, [1895]., 1895. Hard Cover. Second British Edition. Octavo, pp. xviii, [2], 349, [1], [2] advertisements. Frontispiece of Thoreau's Cove. Publishers' olive green cloth with gilt titles and ruling to spine, and border in blind to boards; top edge stained green, others uncut. In the original 1895 unclipped beige dust-jacket. A clean crisp copy, with no annotation or inscriptions. Jacket ever so slightly toned with minor loss head of spine and a little wear at corners. A Fine copy in a Near Fine dust-jacket. Prefatory note by Will H. Dircks dated 1889. Thoreau's classic account of a boat trip in 1839, partly written as a tribute to his brother John, with whom he travelled and who died in 1842. Ostensibly a travel journal Thoreau interweaves the narrative with his musings on art, history, poetry and religion. A scarce book, especially so in the rare, well preserved late 19th c. dust-jacket. Borst, Raymond R. Henry David Thoreau: A Descriptive Bibliography. P. 11.
