About This Item

UK,8vo HB,minus dw/dj,1st edn thus.[Bookclub edn.] FINE.No owner inscrptn,no dw/dj.8vo,168pp,b/w photographic endpapers,an index and b/w photographs. The Waffen-SS led a chequered career in its search for the right to carry arms in the face of opposition from the Army, which considered it had the sole right, then for the material with which to equip itself. The original SSStabeswache was formed by 'Sepp' Deitrich as a praetorian bodyguard for the Fuhrer and carried rifles and sidearms;it would have been of little use as a bodyguard without them, and besides, the unit was so small that the Army couldn't consider it a threat. But as the armed branch of the SS grew in size and power particularly after the Rohm purge and the institution of an SS inspectorate and training schools under Paul Hauser, the Army began to pay more attention.Obstacles were put in the way of SS recruitment, and the Army refused to accept membership of the Totenkopfverbande as the equivalent of military service.Hitler mollified the Army decreeing the SS would come under Wermacht control in wartime. As the war and fighting progressed, the fighting ability of the original Waffen-SS formations proved themselves, they began to receive more modern weapons. By 1943,four premier divisions Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler,Das Reich, Totenkopf and Wiking were recognised as at least the equal of the best Army units. From this point these formations began to receive priority in the allocation of new small arms, artillery, tanks and self-propelled guns and their battalions became larger and stronger than the Army equivalents. Begins with its edged-weapons,the most collectable items of WW2.Then to infantry small arms and support weapons, from pistols,sub-machine guns, rifles and carbines to assault rifles,machine-guns,mortars,mines, grenades and flame-throwers.Next artillery, towed and self-propelled, excluding assault guns and tank destroyer, which are included in Chapter 5 as tanks and armoured fighting vehicles, while Chapter 4 concerns armoured cars.Designed as a companion volume to HITLER'S SAMURAI and HITLER'S TEUTONIC KNIGHTS; see rja561 and rja560.
