About This Item
Pompano Beach: Exposition Press of Florida, 1985. Collection of 9 essays & speeches on racism & justice, self-improvement, music. SIGNED by the author on the free endsheet, with "Best Wishes"; laid in is a small folded 'thanks for sympathy' card with a hand-written note by Jackson to Donald & Mercedes [Russell]. Jackson, born & educated in Texas and Alabama, was a musician, teacher, journalist, activist, & government official; this is noted as his eighth published full-length work; he died in 2016 at the age of 89. While some cataloguers refer to Exposition Press as a 'vanity press' (authors paid to have their work published), the gatekeeping of white publishers often left Black authors no other choice. Rather than reflecting the interests & concerns of such publishers these scarce publications show the deep interests of Black writers even at this later date. Hardcover in jacket. Light wear to book; jacket shows a little edgewear & rubbing, minor chipping & creasing. Text clean; xvi, [2], 70 pages.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Octavo.
