About This Item

New York: Putnam’s, 1927. First Edition; limited issue; one of 1000 numbered copies signed by Lindbergh. A fine copy in the publisher’s box (with a numbered sticker, as called for) and with the publisher’s printed note, identifying its differences from the slightly earlier “popular” (trade) edition. Lindbergh’s feat and later life prompt us to ponder the nature of heroism and hero worship, initial courage and achievement versus subsequent conduct, views, and judgment. Our admiration and, at the same time, our disappointment, are in a conflict not easily resolved in either them or in ourselves. We now expect our heroes portrayed three-dimensionally, exposing their failings to all but the most casual admirer. This ought to humanize them, but instead it often demonizes. We know everything, and we know nothing.
