The colonial edition, published in the same year as the first edition. In the publisher's original red cloth variant binding. This novel was written by H. Rider Haggard, a popular author of adventure novels and a pioneer of the 'lost world' genre. The story follows a young man called Ruper Ullershaw who, after the suicide of the women he loves and promising his mother to always 'follow the way of the spirit, not that of the flesh', spends 11 years soldiering in India and Egypt. After his return to England he is soon sent back to Egypt for a dangerous mission.Advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth. Externally smart with fading to the spine and to the head of the front, marks to the boards, bumping and rubbing to the extremities, slight rubbing to the joints, and very small closed tears to the head and tail of the spine. Hinges starting with a past owner's signature to the front free endpaper and age toning to the endpapers. Internally firmly bound with lightly age toned pages with spotting, heaviest to the front and rear. Very Good
