Description:
New York: Random House, 1943. First Edition. A sharp copy of Cheever's first book, a collection of 30 short stories written between 1930-1942, with several of them previously published in the pages of Collier's, The New Yorker, Story Magazine, Yale Review, and Harper's Bazaar. While the book was critically well-received, it was a poor seller. Cheever (and later, his family) was persistently resistant to allowing the stories here to be included in subsequent collections of his work. First Printing, one of 2,750 copies. Octavo (21.5cm); red cloth, with titling and decorative elements in navy blue on spine and front cover; dark blue topstain; dustjacket; [vi],256,[2]pp. Fine in a very Near Fine dustjacket, unclipped (priced $2.00), with a hint of sunning to spine, and a few very tiny tears.

Description:
Random House, New York, 1943. Book. Good. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. First edition - never reprinted. This copy inscribed by the author on the half-title and dated 1980. 8vo. 256pp. Red cloth, lettered, blocked and ornately bordered in blue at the spine, and with the publisher's imprint blue-stamped to the base of the upper board. Top edge dust soiled, and with just a trace of toning to the leaf margins. The cloth a little marked and rubbed in places, with a little bruising and a hint of wear to the backstrip ends. Family names of former owner (not the recipient of Cheever's inscription) inked to the front pastedown, and almost entirely obscured by the wrapper flap, and a small Chicago dealer plate to the base of the front free endpaper. An almost very good copy in non-price-clipped ($2.00) dust wrapper, lightly toned at the rear panel, and with some edgewear, creasing, and several small fractions of edge-loss, and one slightly smaller area of triangular loss from the base…

Description:
New York: Random House, (1943). First Edition. Hardcover. Minor wear to the spine head; otherwise, the book is fine and bright without any of the gutter darkening typical to this title. The spine of the dustwrapper has minor wear to the heel with chipping to the head just extending to "The" on the spine and to the edges of both panels. The rear panel is soiled, as usual, and the front panel is very attractive. The dustwrapper retains the original printed price. All in all, a nice example. Near Fine in a Very Good dustwrapper without any restoration whatsoever. Cheever's superb first book, a collection of short stories. This copy is SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper and is fairly scarce as such.
