About This Item

New York: Random House, 1943. First Edition. A sharp copy of Cheever's first book, a collection of 30 short stories written between 1930-1942, with several of them previously published in the pages of Collier's, The New Yorker, Story Magazine, Yale Review, and Harper's Bazaar. While the book was critically well-received, it was a poor seller. Cheever (and later, his family) was persistently resistant to allowing the stories here to be included in subsequent collections of his work. First Printing, one of 2,750 copies. Octavo (21.5cm); red cloth, with titling and decorative elements in navy blue on spine and front cover; dark blue topstain; dustjacket; [vi],256,[2]pp. Fine in a very Near Fine dustjacket, unclipped (priced $2.00), with a hint of sunning to spine, and a few very tiny tears.
