About This Item

Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1972. Second Printing with Corrections. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good+/Good+. 8vo. Pp. xv, 167. Beige linen, titles stamped in dark blue on the spine, endpaper maps, pronunciation guide and bibliography: corners gently bumped, former owner name in ink on the front free endpaper, a few leaves lightly crimped. In the color type decorated dust jacket with price $6.95 intact on the front flap and author portrait on the back flap: spine ends chipped, short closed tears and mellowed creases, spine color moderately bleached. Items laid in:

1. Cleveland Amory's "Trade Winds" column torn from the May 6, 1972 issue of Saturday Review featuring a conversation with Game of Words author Willard R. Espy (whose grandfather founded Oysterville, Washington,) which concludes with a playful poem using names from this book. Thrice folded, minimally age toned and marked in ball point ink.

2. A typed copy of Espy's poem with struck-over typos and a copy of a reply poem titled "Can You Toppenish" by Mary George published in Emmet Watson's Seattle Post-Intelligencer column. Twice folded, stains and mellowed creases.

3. An undated University of Washington Press "Book News" release for the first edition of this book. Three leaves printed recto black on goldenrod, corner stapled, folded twice.

4.James Wendell Phillips' death notice (died 14 November) and his obituary, clipped from The Seattle Times of Wednesday, November 16, 1977. Minimally age toned. Phillips updated and expanded Edmond S. Meany's 1923 Origin of Washington Geographic Names and provided an enlightening historical introduction. In addition to writing this and Alaskan-Yukon Place Names, and co-writing Sourdough Sky, Phillips had been promotion director for KING Broadcasting and advertising manager for Bardahl Manufacturing, amongst other activities described in the obituary.

In one of our favorite university press dust jackets, preserved in a clear, removable archival sleeve.
