Inscribed on the front free endpaper by the author (on behalf of himself and his wife, Mary) to "Mr. and Mrs. Philip P. Chase". Size is octavo (8vo), 8.75"/22cm h. Bound in publisher's navy blue cloth, gilt lettering and ornamentation to front board and spine; a debossed neatline frames the front board as well. Deckle fore-edge. Plain white endpapers. [1-6], 7-62, [63-64] blank; six additional coated leaves bound in, unpaginated, with b&w photos/illus; frontispiece ("Meeting of the Fleets" at Scapa Flow in December 1917) faced with tissue guard printed with red caption. Five brief essays, originally published in the Harvard Graduates' Magazine: War and Water; Where Weather Won (Jutland, 1916); The Wind Gods at Gallipoli; John Gilpin Aloft; and Fate and a Forecast. Condition notes: a solid and collectible first printing of a collection of reflections on the role of weather in war. Binding sound and just off square; spine ends rolled w fraying beginning to head; tanning w moderate foxing to edges; interior generally tanned, unmarked but for author inscription. This copy is inscribed by the author to his colleague Philips, the latter then a dean at Harvard, while the author was professor of meteorology at Harvard and director of the Blue Hill Observatory; Franklin Delano Roosevelt was an admirer of McAdie's essays. Furrowed Brow Books was established in 2020. The bookstore's owner, Paul Purman, grew up in an old farmhouse full of books. Paul had been providing online booksales since 2008 through several popular online sales venues. In 2021 Paul was accepted as a member of the Independent Online Booksellers' Association (IOBA), and graduated from the annual Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar (CABS-Minnesota).
